Democracy day rJOLIET – State Senator John Connor (D-Lockport) attended a Youth Democracy Group Day at the Harvey Brooks Foundation in Joliet last Thursday alongside State Representative Natalie Manley (D-Joliet) and State Representative Larry Walsh, Jr. (D-Joliet).

“What an impressive group of young people,” Connor said. “They are clearly paying attention, asking all the right questions, and determined to make real change.  Our future is in good hands.”

The event was held as part of the foundation’s summer youth program, which is meant to help local teens develop work ethics, leadership skills, and entrepreneurial opportunities. Nearly 20 kids from the community attended the event to discuss issues ranging from local water supply to diversity in government.

“It is always inspiring to see a group of engaged and interested young people who are working to shape the future of our state,” said Manley. “It is critical that we encourage them to participate in the political process and work to create positive change in their state and local government.”

The Harvey Brooks Foundation has been active in the Joliet area since its establishment in 1998. Many have benefitted from the Foundation’s decades of work to address a lack of opportunities and to provide opportunities for education and growth, especially in low-income and at-risk communities.

"Being afforded the opportunity to engage with young people in such a meaningful way is a reminder that these are the leaders of tomorrow," said Walsh. "I want to thank the Harvey Brooks Foundation for its commitment to uplifting our youth so they have the ability to recognize their positive impact from a young age. I look forward to our continued partnership which takes a hands-on approach to cultivating young leaders."

More information about the foundation and the programs it offers can be found on its website.

Health equity rNEW LENOX – State Senator John Connor (D-Lockport) attended the Illinois Health and Hospital Association’s inaugural Health Equity Action Day at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox Friday.

“It is incredibly fitting to kick off the weekend of Juneteenth, our newest federal holiday, with a discussion on how to create greater equality right here in Illinois,” Connor said. “Our community benefits greatly from Silver Cross and the work that they do to bridge disparities in health care for our Black and Brown neighbors, and while we still have a long way to go, we have the momentum we need to get there.”

Other notable participants at the Health Equity Action Day included Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, State Senator Michael Hastings (D-Frankfort), members of the Healthy Community Commission and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council and several hospital leaders. The group engaged in a roundtable discussion regarding racial disparities in health care and how to best address them, especially in light of the manner in which COVID-19 disproportionately ravaged communities of color.

Silver Cross Hospital founded its Healthy Community Commission in 2008 in an effort to create a stronger, healthier future for everyone it serves. The community-based organization provides support for education, workforce development training and enrichment activities for local youth. It has awarded $2.5 million in educational scholarships and workforce development grants to numerous Joliet-area residents and organizations over the last 13 years.

“The best way to tackle any problem is to do it together,” Connor said. “I look forward to continuing to work alongside this fantastic team to ensure that all Illinoisans have access to affordable and equitable health care.”

Book Club Connor Page 1 rLOCKPORT – To help kids have fun and stay engaged this summer, State Senator John Connor (D-Lockport) is hosting a Summer Book Club for kids across the 43rd Senate District.

“Reading is absolutely crucial, especially for younger kids,” Connor said. “If the book club helps to foster a love of reading in even just one child in the community, it will have done its job.”

The book club requires kids to read any eight books they choose, record them on a form with a parent, guardian, or other important adult’s signature, and return the form by Aug. 11. Everyone who completes the summer book club will be invited to attend an ice cream social hosted by Senator Connor at Cool Creations Homemade Ice Cream to celebrate.

“Kids can go on all kinds of adventures this summer through books,” Connor said. “Reading over the summer break can also help keep students sharp and ready to head back to class in the fall.”

Book club forms can be printed off at or requested via mail by calling Connor’s district office at (815) 207-4445.

Residents with any further questions are welcome to call the district office as well.
