Joliet airport presentation rLOCKPORT – Parking at the Joliet Regional Airport will soon improve thanks to a $688,500 state investment, State Senator John Connor (D-Lockport) announced.

“We’re lucky to have the Joliet Regional Airport as such a fantastic resource for our community,” Connor said. “Not only do residents and tourists alike rely on it for quick and efficient travel, but our local economy depends on the business ventures that the airport helps facilitate.”

Rebuild Illinois has designated a total of $94 million for 96 airport projects in both urban and rural communities across the state. Projects will include planning, construction, reconstruction, development and improvement of public airports to increase safety and efficiency. Communities also will benefit from increased aviation access, good-paying jobs during construction and long-term opportunities for workforce expansion.

Joliet Regional Airport, which earned a 2020 General Aviation Airport of the Year award, will undergo parking lot rehabilitation as a result of the funds.

“The commitment to safety and service displayed by the staff at the Joliet Regional Airport is outstanding,” Connor said. “I am pleased to see that our airport will receive the funding it needs to continue to benefit our community for years to come.”

an armed forces veteran shows his patriotism at liberty state park new jersey 9060dc 1600 rLOCKPORT – In recognition of sacrifices made by brave Illinoisans who have served our country, State Senator John Connor (D-Lockport) is inviting people to write friendly and encouraging letters to residents of veteran’s homes ahead of Veterans Day.

“Our veterans have all made tremendous sacrifices for us, and Operation Rising Spirit gives us an opportunity to honor those sacrifices,” Connor said. “In our community and across the state, our service members deserve to feel recognized and appreciated for their contributions.”

Operation Rising Spirit is an initiative of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs that encourages communities to write letters to residents in the care of veterans’ homes in Illinois. At a time when isolation is at a record high, the letters are meant to extend friendly affirmation for the bravery and courage of veterans both throughout their service and the pandemic.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many residents of long-term care facilities have not been able to see friends or family for quite some time,” Connor said. “By taking the time to send kind messages and words of encouragement, we can help make our veterans across the state feel remembered and appreciated, and combat the loneliness they may be experiencing.”

The campaign will focus on veterans’ homes in Illinois, located in Anna, Chicago, LaSalle, Manteno, and Quincy. To send a message to a veteran or a veteran home, visit Send-a-note. For people wanting to send physical letters, locations for each of the veterans’ homes can be found here.

102821HAO00031SPRINGFIELD – In response to increasing fears of future water insecurity in the Joliet area, legislation sponsored by State Senator John Connor (D-Lockport) provides for the establishment of a Joliet-region water commission.

“The water supply that our communities rely on won’t be able to provide for us by 2030. Our aquifer is being depleted at twice its natural refill rate, and we’re running out of time” Connor said. “If we don’t start building a solution now, we will face a water crisis.”

Joliet, Romeoville, Shorewood, Lockport, Lemont, Channahon, Elwood, and Minooka all use the underground Cambrian-Ordovician sandstone aquifer system as their primary source of water. The aquifer is being depleted at twice its natural recharge rate, forcing these communities to seek an answer before the depletion of the aquifer in 2030, according to a recent assessment by the city of Joliet.

Senate Bill 280 establishes the Regional Water Commissions Act, which would allow municipalities to form a regional commission to build, own, and operate a water system. This water commission will have the ability to build and operate a 31-mile pipeline connecting to the city of Chicago water system, providing a connection to Lake Michigan water for the community.

Not only will this pipeline offer a sustainable water source to local families, it will bring thousands of construction jobs to the community.

“Benjamin Franklin said ‘When the well is dry, we know the worth of water.’  This legislation ensures that our Joliet area communities never have to test that theory with a dry well,” Connor said. “Water is the most basic necessity, and planning for a secure and clean water source for ourselves and future generations isn’t optional, it is our most important mission.”

Senate Bill 280 now awaits further action.
